VARUS to install solar panels on 48 supermarkets with ₴150 million investment July 21, 2025
The VARUS supermarket chain is investing ₴150 million in the installation of solar power plants at 48 out of 115 locations. The project is expected to pay off within two years and deliver ₴50 million in annual savings afterward.
The company launched a large-scale energy independence program in May 2025. The total capacity of the solar installations will reach 4,800 kWh, enabling the generation of more than 5 million kWh of electricity per year.

The planned generation will cover 21% of the stores’ annual energy consumption — the optimal level for maximum return on investment. During daylight hours, stores will cover 95% of their needs with solar energy, using only 5% from the grid.
VARUS opted not to use energy storage systems due to their high cost and 7+ year payback period. Instead, the company chose a direct consumption model for the generated electricity.
“Solar panels not only reduce costs — they strengthen our energy independence. This is especially important today, when having your own energy source becomes a competitive advantage,” the company commented.
To ensure efficiency, VARUS implemented a real-time digital monitoring system. The company also plans to include solar panels as a standard feature for all new stores and is exploring the potential for installing gas-diesel generators in the future.
